Bass Strait Charters born out of a passion for adventure on the water

The Bass Strait Fishing Charters icon was inspired by the colours of the local kingfish, just like the one pictured here with Captain Dan. The clean lines and bold tones echo the fish’s sleek shape and that flash of blue, green and gold you see out on the water.

About Us

Captain Dan “Crackers” Russell was born and bred on the Mornington Peninsula and has spent most of his life fishing the rich waters of Port Phillip Bay and Bass Strait. From an early age, Dan developed a deep respect for the water and a strong understanding of local conditions, tides, and fish behaviour. He learned the trade under the guidance of respected local skipper Captain Phil Stephens of Rip Charters, spending years working as a deckhand and gaining valuable, hands-on experience on charter vessels.

After building his skills on the water, Dan went on to become a certified Coxswain and later earned his Master 5 qualification, credentials he has proudly held for over a decade. His calm approach, strong safety focus, and practical experience give guests confidence and a relaxed, enjoyable day on the water, no matter their experience level.

Alongside Dan is his first mate and wife, Sarah, who plays a vital role in the day-to-day running of the charters. Together, they proudly operate Bass Strait Charters, providing friendly, well-organised recreational fishing trips for individuals, families, and small groups.

Whether targeting snapper and whiting inside Port Phillip Bay or venturing through the Heads in search of larger offshore species, Dan and Sarah bring local knowledge, patience, and a genuine love of fishing to every trip. Their goal is simple: safe boating, honest advice, and giving every guest the best possible chance of a great day on the water.

About Fishing in Port Phillip Bay and Beyond the Heads

Operating from Sorrento, Bass Strait Fishing Charters sits right at the gateway to some of Victoria’s most productive fishing waters. Port Phillip Bay offers calm, sheltered conditions that are ideal for anglers of all experience levels. These waters are home to an impressive range of species including snapper, King George whiting, flathead, Australian salmon, gummy shark and squid. Seasonal runs bring exciting action, with spring and summer often delivering excellent snapper and squid fishing, while cooler months are well known for gummy sharks and whiting.

Just outside the famous “Heads” lies the open waters of Bass Strait, where the fishing steps up another level. Here, anglers can target powerful species such as bluefin tuna, kingfish, mako and thresher shark, as well as deep water species that thrive in the rich, offshore currents. These trips are ideal for those looking for a true offshore fishing experience and the chance to land trophy sized fish.

Every charter is tailored to suit the conditions on the day, ensuring the safest and most enjoyable experience while giving guests the best opportunity for a memorable catch.
